Living Positive Ngong

The three main target groups of Living Positive Ngong activities are women, children and grandmothers living in the slums of Ngong division in Rift Valley province in Kenya. Living Positive Ngong has choses these three categories as they represent the people most infected and affected by the HIV/AIDS scourge in Kenya.

The exact number of people living in the slums of Ngong division is not known. It has been estimated that approximately 18 000 people are living in these slums. In general, the HIV infection rates of the slums in Kenya are much higher than the average infection rate of the urban areas. The HIV infection rate of the slums is hard to estimate, as a big percentage of the people are not aware of their HIV status. Due to the stigmatization caused by an HIV diagnosis, people are avoiding HIV tests. The stigmatization also causes people to disclose the information of their HIV status. HIV/AIDS can therefore still be seen as a taboo among the slum residents.
