Primary School Children's Profiles
Below you can see some of the profiles of the primary school aged children that are included in the Living Positive chidlren's program. All the children need financial support to pay their school and medical fees. The annual cost of sponsoring a child at the primary school level is 35000 Ksh (∼320€). Name: Alice Wanjiku

Alice is the second born in a family of two. Her and her sister, Purity Cheptoo live with their mother, Angelina Wanjiku in Ng’ong Kibiko Area. The mother dropped out of school and got married to a military man as his second wife, who brought her back to her parents home when she became sick, abandoned her and has never came back for four years. Angelina, who is HIV positive, had a nervous breakdown and left Alice , who is also HIV positive and is on the Anti Retroviral Drugs and Purity under the care of her parents, who are severe alcoholics and have no means of earning al living. The child needs foster home where he can access care and protection.

John is an only child and an orphan. His single mother was young and died of HIV related illness. He now stays in Ng’ong Slums with his maternal grandmother. The grandmother is HIV positive and a member of the Living Positive therapy group. John is talented in his class work and always top in his class. Given the opportunity john can do very well in academics. He would like to become a doctor when he grows up. The child needs foster home where he can access care and protection.

Kevin’s mother, Dorcas came to Ngong to visit her aunt when she was 23 years old and eventually married and moved to Mathare slums. In 2005 she was diagnosed with throat cancer and had an operation leaving her speechless. She depends on well wishes and sometimes her husband substitutes this income by selling electronics at the local market. Kelvin has four siblings, two of which are twin babies.

Olivia’s mother, Ann was born and brought-up in the slums by single mother. Her mother was a prostitute and died of HIV related illnesses and left Ann under the care of her elder sister. With no proper guardian, Ann dropped out of school and got into prostitution and other odd jobs. She married Olivia’s father at the age of sixteen and she is now staying with him, an elderly widower who lost his first wife with HIV related illnesses. Olivia and Ann are both infected with HIV most likely by Olivia’s father. They go to the Coptic Hospital for monthly medical check-ups.

Purity is the first born in a family of two. She lives with her sister, Alice Wanjiku, and their mother, Angelina Wanjiku, in Ng’ong Kibiko Area. Anastasia is a grand child of Anastasia Njeri.She lives with her grand mother in the slum in Ngong Division (Mathare Slum). Her husband died in a road accident, after the dead of her husband she moved to the slum to stay with her sister and involved herself in prostitution. She later dropped the habit and became strict Christian but although too late. She visited a VCT in 2006 and got to know of her HIV status. She is a member of Living Positive Kenya Therapy Group. Ngina is a bright girl in school. She likes singing.

Beatrice’s mother, Ann was born in Central Kenya to a family with five children. Ann’s parents had no money to take Ann to school and she got married to an administration police officer at the age of sixteen years. Ann was constantly assaulted both physically and sexually. The man separated from Ann and married another woman after four years of marriage and one child. Ann had no other means of livelihood and became a barmaid as well as a prostitute at times. Ann now sells groundnuts to earn a living. In the year 2003 Beatrice’s sister died of HIV/AIDS related illnesses and that’s how Ann learned that she is infected. She developed full blown AIDS in the year 2005 and through the support of the organization she got treatment and recovered miraculously.

Daniel is the last born in a family of six. The children live in the outskirts of Ngong with their mother Mary Gathoni in a very big deserted and incomplete house which is very risky for the boy since the house has no doors nor windows. The children’s biological father died in the year 2000 due to blood pressure attack. The family lives under extreme poverty to the extent of missing meals in a day. Both her mother and the man are HIV positive, they both knew of their status in August 2007 and both have not come in terms with it and have been involved in physical violence each blaming one another for the infection of HIV Virus. The children are in need of protection from this man who is not only HIV positive but also has mental problem. Mary is a member of Living Positive Program Therapy Group and a community health worker. Living Positive Penya would like to appeal for a donor to support this child in his basic needs and school fees.

The family lives under extreme poverty to the extent of missing meals in a day. Both her mother and the man are HIV positive, they both knew of their status in August 2007 and both have not come in terms with it and have been involved in physical violence each blaming one another for the infection of HIV Virus. The children especially the girls at their teenage are in need of protection from this man who is not only HIV positive but also has mental problem. Mary is a member of Living Positive Program Therapy Group and a community health worker. Faith would like to continue with her studies but her worry is about tuition and school fees. Living Positive Program would like to link up Faith with a sponsor to help her continue with her education in a boarding school which is more safe for her.

His mother Agnes Wanjiru is HIV positive and a member of Living Positive Kenya therapy group. Kevin is a very hard working boy in school.

Margret lives with her grandmother in the Ngong Gichagi slum. Margret’s mother who was HIV Positive died while giving birth to her. Margret’s three siblings also live with their grandmother and are aged 10, 9 and 8 years old. Margret’s grandmother has no income and has been faced with lots of challenges in meeting the demands of raising her grandchildren. Feeding and educating the children is the biggest problem.

Musa lives with his grandmother in the Ngong Bulbul area. His mother was drugged while traveling with her three children. The mother overdosed and became mentally ill, disappearing from home. Police officers found the stranded children and brought them to their grandmother. The grandmother is sick from working on a flower farm due to the chemicals. She is ill and cannot afford to go to the hospital for treatment. She has no source of income. Nicholas has two siblings. One is currently attending a two-year vocational training program. Musa is HIV positive and on drugs. His grandmother cannot afford the transportation to and from the hospital to get Musa’s medication and must borrow money from friends and family. Musa’s grandmother cannot afford the most basic needs for her children.

Ruth is the only child of Elizabeth and her husband. Elizabeth has suffered severely under the brutal physical and sexual attacks from her husband. Elizabeth got HIV from her husband, after which he abandoned his family. Elizabeth transmitted HIV to Ruth during her prenatal period. Elizabeth is a hard working person and sells farm products from her little shamba. This income however does not cover enough for school fees. Living positive Kenya would like to appeal to a donor to help Ruth with her school fees.
