Secondary School Children's Profiles
Below you can see some of the profiles of the secondary school aged children that are included in the Living Positive chidlren's program. All the children need financial support to pay their school and medical fees. The annual cost of sponsoring a child at the secondary school level is 35000 Ksh (320€). Lucy is the first born in family of three children. She lives with her parents in Ng’ong Gichagi slums. The father abuses alcohol and other substances and harasses the whole family while drunk. The mother is the only hope for the children, but she has no source of income and depends on casual jobs to feed her family. Lucy is very eager to pursue her academic goals but the parents are unable to provide her school fees. Living Positive Program would like to link Lucy with a donor so that she is able to meet her school needs.

Philip is the only child of single mother (Ann Wambui) born out of wedlock. The bearing of child out of wedlock brought friction between Ann and her parents, making her to leave her rural home to a Nairobi slum (Kibera) to live with her sister. While she was there desperately with a child and no income she met a man who offered to marry her as a fifth wife. This man was already infected with HIV/AIDS and four years later he died leaving Ann and Philip in a slum in Ngong.Philip lives with his mother in a small slum in Ngong Division. After the death of her husband, Ann visited a VCT centre and got to know of her HIV status. She has had full blown AIDS; she is the chairlady of Living Positive Kenya Therapy Group and A community health worker. Philip is very hard working in school and a good football player.

Gabriel is the 1st born in a family of three children. He lives with his parents Mr. Ndolo and Teresia Ndolo in Ngong Mathare slums together with his siblings. Gabriel parents are HIV positive and neither of them are employed, meaning they struggle a lot to provide for their family’s daily needs. Gabriel did well in his end of primary examination and got admission to a secondary school which he has not been able to report to due to lack of school fees and requirements. Living Positive Program would like to link Gabriel with a donor so as to facilitate his school needs.

Mary is the only child of Annastasia Kiboke and her brutal and unfaithful husband. After infecting Annastasia with HIV he abandoned them. Mary and Annastasia now stay with Mary’s grandparents. Her grandfather being bedridden by paralism has Annastasia as a caretaker. Annastasia has no means for income. On top of that because of her hard childhood so far Mary is constantly running away from home. Living positive Kenya would like to appeal to a donor to help Mary with her basic needs.

Nancy went to primary school in Kasarani, where she stayed with her grandmother. In early 2009 she moved to Mathare slum to stay with her mother, because the family could no more afford her school fees for secondary school. Nancy has two sisters and three brothers. Her future dream is to become a teacher and her favourite subject in school is science. Nancy should get a sponsor as soon as possible so she could continue in school. Spending her days in the slum she is in serious danger of becoming sexually abused, pregnant or HIV-infected by older men. Without something to do she can also lose her motivation and hope for the future.

Nicholas lives with his grandmother in the Ngong Bulbul area. His mother was drugged while traveling with her three children. The mother overdosed and became mentally ill, disappearing from home. Police officers found the stranded children and brought them to their grandmother. The grandmother is sick from working on a flower farm due to the chemicals. She is ill and cannot afford to go to the hospital for treatment. She has no source of income. Nicholas has two siblings. One sibling is HIV positive and on drugs. Nicholas’ grandmother cannot afford the transportation to and from the hospital and must borrow money. Nicholas is currently attending vocational school but needs sponsorship in order to continue. The program lasts two years and costs approximately 20 000 Ksh per year. He also needs the overalls required for the program and basic supplies and toiletries. Nicholas’ grandmother cannot afford the most basic needs for her children.

Sammy is the first born in a family of six. The children live in the outskirts of Ngong with their mother Mary Gathoni in a very big deserted and incomplete house which is very risky for the boy since the house has no doors nor windows. The children’s biological father died in the year 2000 due to blood pressure attack. The family lives under extreme poverty to the extent of missing meals in a day. Both her mother and the man are HIV positive, they both knew of their status in August 2007 and both have not come in terms with it and have been involved in physical violence each blaming one another for the infection of HIV Virus. The children are in need of protection from this man who is not only HIV positive but also has mental problem.
Mary is a member of Living Positive Kenya Therapy Group and A community health worker. Sammy would like to continue with her studies but her worry is about tuition and school fees.
