The family has lived in Mathare slum since April 2008. The mother works in a small shop selling eggs and milk on market days (Wednesday and Saturday) when the owner of the shop is elsewhere. This is the only income for the mother, who has to pay the 500 Ksh rent every month, in addition to other expenses. At the daycare Stephen seems very lonely and quiet and doesn't interact with other children. This is most likely because he doesn't speak much swahili since kikuyu is the main language in his family. Stephen has had stomach aches which have been diagnosed as stomach worms. Recently he has had aches in chest as well as cough, but the stomach has been better.
